For Harwich Haven Authority (HHA), “Creating Positive Impact” is not just a values statement in a company brochure, it’s a guiding principle woven through every decision, project and long-term ambition. Few people embody this more than Sustainability Manager Linzi Jobber, whose day-to-day work shapes how one of the UK’s largest trust ports protects, enhances and champions the Haven’s unique environment and communities.

Linzi said:

“A major part of my role is collaboration. I work closely with colleagues across Marine, Dredging and Environment, Communications, and Health & Safety to ensure environmental and social opportunities are identified early and acted upon. I also engage with external partners, including Natural England, the Environment Agency, the Marine Management Organisation, universities and local groups, to ensure our sustainability goals reflect both community needs and national standards.

This year has been a standout one for us. Embedding sustainable practices into all we do means that HHA delivered a record-breaking £5.1 million in social value, our highest ever and a significant milestone as the first trust port to adopt the TOMs framework. We contributed more than £1.2 million to environmental initiatives through carbon reduction efforts, supported 108 local jobs, and invested in a wide range of community projects.

Implementing our charitable giving policy is a huge part of the role, ensuring the HHA Community Fund is distributed to good causes through both the Essex and Suffolk Community Foundations. Supporting grassroots causes and charities within a 20-mile radius is an integral part of our ESG Strategy and something employees are very passionate about.

One of the most rewarding highlights has been the expansion of Coastal Discoveries, our beach-school programme that has given more than 2,000 children the chance to explore the coastline and develop a connection with nature.

Innovation has also been a big focus. I’ve been involved in our collaborative Digital Twin project OptiMar, which Innovate UK funds through the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition Round 6 (CMDC6). We’re working with partners to explore intelligent, data-driven tools that will shape the future of marine sustainability. It’s exciting to help uncover solutions that not only benefit HHA but have the potential to support the wider sector.

Looking ahead to 2026, I’m particularly excited about delivering a new Impact Report that will clearly articulate the positive outcomes we’re generating across the Haven. I’ll also continue to drive progress on our Net-Zero and Biodiversity Net Gain ambitions, strengthen our ESG reporting, and champion sustainability at every level of the organisation.

Every day in this role brings new challenges and new opportunities. For me, it always comes back to one purpose: ensuring we create real, lasting, positive impact for our environment, our communities and the future of the Haven.”
