Lacey Gale
Commercial Manager
DeepBlue Logistics
After a successful career at one of the world’s leading shipping lines, Lacey Gale recently made the leap into freight forwarding, joining DeepBlue Logistics as Commercial Manager. We caught up with her to hear what inspired the move, how the industry has evolved, and where she sees the significant opportunities ahead.
What inspired your move to Deepblue Logistics, and what excites you most about the role?
I’ve known the team at DeepBlue for a long time, and despite lacking hands-on experience in a freight forwarding environment, I was confident that I could rely on their expertise and support to succeed. Their reputation for building strong, lasting client relationships was a major draw. I’d reached a point in my career where I wanted to focus more on the parts of the industry I’m truly passionate about – and this role gives me that freedom.
What are some of the biggest industry changes you’ve witnessed during your career, and how have they shaped your approach?
The industry has certainly presented its fair share of challenges, so adaptability is key. If there’s one constant, it’ always expect the unexpected. I’ve learned the importance of understanding the pain points of every customer—whether they’re long-standing or brand new—so I can tailor my approach to deliver the right level of service and support.
How does working for a logistics company differ commercially from working within a global shipping line?
There are some subtle but important differences. At a shipping line, visibility and presence were everything—you were expected to be seen and available. I hadn’t anticipated just how overwhelmed some businesses feel by the sheer volume of contact from freight forwarders. That’s meant adapting my style, which I’ve found refreshing. I now have the opportunity to build more personable and genuine connections with clients.
Where do you see the greatest opportunities and challenges in the shipping and logistics sector right now?
Opportunities lie in the rise of AI. Used in the right way, it has enormous potential to enhance day-to-day operations and improve the service we deliver. The challenge is to ensure that we integrate it meaningfully-without losing the human touch.
As for challenges, our industry remains fragile and highly susceptible to global events. This makes communication and strong client relationships more important than ever. Keeping customers informed and anticipating changes are crucial
When you’re not working, how do you like to unwind – and what would your perfect weekend look like?
Now that I’ve hit 40 and work socialising has calmed down a bit, I’m finally prioritising my health and fitness. I’ve joined ATP Fitness in Felixstowe, and I’m making time for regular workouts, trying to get those steps in! Life’s still hectic with two daughters to juggle, from school clubs to ferrying my teenager and her friends around. But on a perfect weekend, I’d love to be with friends and family, and my dogs, Lennon and Lola, to enjoy some live music and be near the water.
