Harwich Haven Authority (HHA), the organisation responsible for preserving the 150 square miles of waterways for our region’s major ports, has been shortlisted in the Employer of the Year category at the government’s National Apprenticeship and Skills Awards.

HHA champions apprenticeships and training schemes, with more than 5% of its workforce now in apprenticeship or “earn and learn” roles.

Helen Rudd, Strategy and Partnerships Director at HHA, said: “This recognition reflects the authority’s commitment to investing in people and creating opportunities that help talent thrive.

“Apprentices and early-career colleagues are a vital part of HHA’s business, bringing fresh perspectives, innovation and ambition.

“Their success is only possible thanks to the dedication of the teams who mentor, support and connect as one – a true demonstration of HHA’s core value, Connecting as One Team.”

Apprentices at HHA are given a clear pathway to careers in maritime, with 90% completing their course and progressing to diverse roles within the organisation.

Those include the opportunity to go on and work full-time in the maritime industry, and some have even stayed on as Assistant Coxswains at HHA.

This is not the first time its programme has received national recognition, having also been shortlisted in the same category at this year’s Maritime UK Awards.

The apprenticeship programme has also been described as “industry-leading” by Searegs Training for its breadth, quality and added value opportunities.

Helen added, “Being named a finalist is more than an accolade.

“It reinforces HHA’s position as an employer of choice in the region, and underlines the opportunities available to those who join the organisation – whether they are just starting their career journey or looking to develop new skills.”

The East of England regional awards ceremony will take place on Wednesday, October 8, at the Hilton Cambridge City Centre.
