HHA Scoops AwardAuthority’s inclusive culture sets a new standard for diversity in the ports sector.
Harwich Haven Authority (HHA) has been named Inclusive Workplace of the Year at the British Ports Association (BPA) Conference 2025, recognising its outstanding commitment to building a diverse, equitable and supportive workplace culture.
The award celebrates HHA’s efforts to embed inclusivity across every level of the organisation – from recruitment and leadership to training and operational delivery. Central to this success is the Authority’s Apprenticeship Programme, which has helped attract and develop talent from a range of backgrounds. The programme recently led to the creation of the UK’s first all-female launch crew – a groundbreaking achievement in an industry where women remain underrepresented in technical and seafaring roles.
“We’re incredibly proud to receive this national recognition,” said Helen Rudd, Strategy & Partnerships Director at Harwich Haven Authority. “Inclusivity isn’t just something we talk about – it’s embedded in how we operate, recruit, and support our people. This award reflects the hard work and passion of every member of our team.”
Over the past 18 months, HHA has enhanced parental leave policies, introduced flexible working and phased retirement options, provided above Real Living Wage pay for all apprentices, and trained all managers in inclusive leadership. These actions have contributed to a 50/50 gender balance at both Board and Executive levels and a 3% rise in applications from women since 2024.
“Our apprenticeships are about more than training – they’re about opportunity,” added Helen Rudd. “By creating a culture where everyone can thrive, regardless of background or gender, we’re helping to shape a more inclusive future for maritime.”
