The unexpected closure of Holyhead Port due to damage from Storm Darragh has caused significant disruptions for haulage operators during the critical pre-Christmas period. The port, a key conduit for goods between the UK and Ireland, is expected to remain closed until at least December 19, 2024, leading to substantial delivery delays and supply chain challenges.

Darren Murphy, Director of BM Transport, described the situation as a “disaster” for his business, highlighting the unprecedented nature of the closure.

In response to the crisis, the Road Haulage Association (RHA) has welcomed the UK Government’s decision to relax drivers’ hours regulations temporarily. This measure aims to give hauliers increased flexibility to manage the delays and rerouting necessitated by the port’s closure. The RHA emphasized the importance of maintaining safety standards despite the relaxation and advised operators to use the extended hours judiciously.

Additionally, the Welsh Government has reopened the HGV parking facility at Holyhead, which had been temporarily closed due to budgetary pressures. Rhys Williams, RHA Regional Operations Manager, stated that this decision is a positive step that will help alleviate some of the pressure on the remaining truck stop, providing much-needed rest and welfare facilities for drivers arriving in Holyhead.

The closure has also impacted postal services, with An Post, Ireland’s national postal service, working to clear a backlog of parcels. The company has rerouted shipments through alternative ports and is deploying additional resources, including air freight, to ensure deliveries reach customers by December 21. An Post advises customers to check with UK retailers regarding delivery dates and to post items as early as possible.
