Why do you think it is important to celebrate International Women’s Day?
International Women’s Day is a day to celebrate and highlight the work underway to progress gender equality and make a positive difference for working women.
Have you faced any barriers in your career due to being a woman? If so, how did you overcome them?
Fortunately, I have entered the workplace in a time of greater equality. During my career at GAC, I have always felt supported and propelled as a woman.
Through its charter membership of Maritime UK’s Diversity in Maritime Programme, GAC UK has made great strides in recent years to become a more inclusive employer, setting up gender equality initiatives and addressing LGBTQ+ and ethnicity focused targets.
The logistics sector is historically male-dominated, but this is changing. Businesses like GAC that incorporate diversity and inclusion are more likely to attract and retain talent that might otherwise have been overlooked.
What is the most important piece of advice you have been given?
‘It’s better to regret the things you do than regret the things you don’t do’ – of course, this doesn’t apply to all aspects of life, but most. Life’s too short to wonder ‘what if’.
Is there anyone that inspires you in your career?
All women that I encounter. Those who are career-focused, family-focused, and all those in between.
What advice would you offer other women starting a career in logistics?
Don’t discount this sector because most of the industry is male-orientated. And finally, when looking to advance to a new position, give yourself the benefit of the doubt.
