For this month’s Five Minutes With… interview, we reconnect with Harwich Haven Authority’s Amedeo De Masi to explore what fuels his passion for his role in Vessel Traffic Services.

How long have you been working at HHA, and what inspired you to pursue a career in maritime operations and VTS in particular?

I joined HHA in October 2023 after working at sea as a cadet on tankers and as a senior enforcement officer on offshore patrol vessels. In these roles, I developed a strong interest in the safety side of navigation. At HHA, I found not just a job, but a career path, as it is an organisation that invests in its people and encourages you to grow. That support really matters.

How has the role of a VTS Officer evolved since you started?

The VTS role is constantly evolving – new digital systems, more advanced RADARs, and the growing size and complexity of ships. It’s exciting, but it also means continuous training and development are essential. This is something HHA is genuinely committed to, which ensures we stay equipped to meet future challenges.

What skills are essential for someone considering a career in VTS?

A strong maritime background helps, but I work with people here who have had a complete career change and have been supported through full training to carry out their role effectively. Adaptability, communication, teamwork, forward thinking, and solid IT skills are also key. It’s a role where collaboration and customer service meet technical expertise – all underpinned by an unwavering focus on safety.
